Ive been loving the recent Fatkini movement on XOjane.com encouraging women of all shapes and sizes to embrace their swimsuits and stop feeling self conscious on the beach or by the pool.
Gabi Gregg kick started this on her blog asking for women to send in pics of themselves to help us all feel good about wearing a bikini and posting her own picture up to get the ball rolling.Despite attracting the inevitable heckling and finger waging what emerged was a lovely celebration of body diversity and a great reminder that we come in all shapes and sizes despite what glossy magazines might suggest.

For many women and particularly those who are plus sized the "swimsuit" issue can strike fear in their hearts.
Owning your curves and shape when wearing a killer outfit and lashings of lipstick is one thing. Having to pull off the same confidence with nothing more than glorified knickers and bra on is another.
Here are my tips for enjoying your holiday and not feeling self conscious when rocking swimwear.
|Take off the body fascist goggles|
Most holiday destinations are not crawling with Victoria Secrets models. Sure there will always be a few leggy lovelies but stop obsessing about your stretch marks for one cotton picking moment and take a really good look around.
You will see that our wonderful body's come in all shapes and sizes, we are fat, skinny, scarred, wrinkled, pert, dimpled, some have cellulite some are unlined into their 80's. We all have hang ups but the trick is not to let yours interfere with living your life to the full.Takes off the body fascist goggles and replace them with some snazzy cat eye sunnies instead, see isn't it a nicer view.

Devote Time To Your Beachwear
Invest as much time (if not more) in finding swimwear as you do sorting out the rest of your holiday wardrobe.
Too often women with curves will end up with dull black all in ones because they have grabbed it in misery from somewhere and hope it covers enough of them as possible.I call these body burkas, theres no place for them in your holiday suitcase, you are too fabulous to be smothered in the Lycra version of a black polo neck.
Swimwear is clever nowadays.Fashions current obsession with all things "retro" means its never been a better time to find flattering swimwear which will enhance your best bits and give you enough coverage that you don't feel vulnerable or exposed.1950's inspired swimsuits are made for curves.

The swimsuit I'm wearing in these pictures is by Elomi
There latest range is really clever. You start by picking your bikini which is available in proper bra sizes (no over spillage) you then choose your bottoms which come in some very vintage inspired high waisted styles or you can even have one with a little skirt attached and you finish with a fab swim dress in a matching colour (perfect for chucking on after a swim or when you want to go to the bar) I can honestly say I felt really fabulous in this collection. I felt nipped in at the waist, pushed up at the boobies and the little dress gave me enough coverage for walking around in.
|Get yourself beach ready with a mani, pedi and some fake tan|
If you know you are going to feel a little self conscious in your bikini give yourself a good start. Fake tan your legs, get a pedi mani and a bikini wax.
Lying on a sun lounger staring at pale stubbly legs and chipped toenail polish is not going to make you feel like a hottie, it will reaffirm any negative feelings you have about yourself and theres no room for them on holiday. So lavish yourself with lots of beauty treatments before you go (I always get a shellac pedicure as it will last all holiday) to me when the Soap and Glory sugar scrub and Carins fake tan come out I know its nearly holiday time!
If venturing out without the aid of spanx and well cut frocks makes you feel more beach ball than hourglass take a leaf out of my book. Make sure everything from your beach towels to your sunglasses case scream glamour.
I have a gold leopard print sunglasses case, a polka dot beach towel and some neon pink sunglasses. Along with my clear factor 50 suntan cream I also slick on lots of lip gloss and even have a hand fan so I don't feel sweaty. My look is completed by hair flowers, a large floppy Joan Collins inspired hat and Hello Kitty flip flops.
This may seem like a lot of work for a few weeks R an R by a pool but by knowing in advance you have got some great poolside looks pulled together, have stylish plans for covers ups for toilet or bar visits and know your swimwear flatters you, you wont feel self conscious and can enjoy yourself.
